New Features For Using Facebook As Your Page

In February 2011, Facebook rolled out many new features for business pages. One of the most useful lets you use Facebook as your page. This means you can:

  • Like other business pages.
  • Create a news feed with status updates from pages your business likes.
  • Like status updates from pages your business likes as your page.
  • Comment on status updates of pages your business likes as your page.
  • Share items from your business news feed on your page wall.

Together, these features allow your business to interact on Facebook with other businesses. This means you can expand your Facebook conversations to other businesses, and indirectly, to the fans of those businesses.

In addition, Facebook provides notifications when:

  • Someone likes your page.
  • Someone likes or comments on your status update.

Facebook As Page Limitations

With these new features, you still cannot interact directly with personal Facebook profiles, even if the person likes your business. For example, you cannot:

  • Friend a Facebook profile.
  • Like status updates from Facebook profiles.
  • Comment on status updates from Facebook profiles.

Use Facebook As Page

To use Facebook as your page:

  1. Click Account (top right).
  2. Click Use Facebook As Page.
  3. Locate the page in the list (if you administer more than one page).
  4. Click Switch.

Everything you do while using Facebook as your page shows up as your page, and not as you (your personal profile). For example, if I’m using Facebook as Social Media DIY and I comment on a status update, the comment comes from Social Media DIY and not Charlene Kingston.

Here are some things you can do using Facebook as your page:

  • To display your page, click click Profile (top right).
  • To like a page, display the page and click Like.
  • To display your page’s news feed (status updates from pages your business likes), click Home (top right).
  • To add a comment to a news feed item, click Comment, type your comment in the box next to your page’s picture thumbnail, and press Enter.
  • To like a news feed item, click Like.
  • To share a news feed item, click Share. Facebook opens the Post To Profile window. Type your personalized message, and click Share. Facebook posts the item on your page’s wall.
  • To stop using Facebook as your page, click Account (top right) and choose Switch Back To [Your Name].

This feature takes a little rethinking. Now, before you post or respond, you have to ask yourself: Am I using Facebook as me or as my page?

  1. Thanks for this article. I was familiar with “Use Facebook as a Page”, and how I can see “News Feeds” from other pages that my business “Likes”. I can do that by liking their page and clicking on the Facebook logo to see those news feeds. However, I want ALL users to continually see these news feeds – not just me the administrator of the business page. How can I do that?

  2. Charlene Kingston says:

There isn’t any way to let the people who like your Facebook page to see your news feed. Only the page administrators can see the page’s news feeds. You can share items that appear in your news feed, which means that you add them to your page’s wall. That way, some of the people who like your page would see these items (based on Facebook’s complicated formula for how it decides what to share).

If you want to publish content from other sources (for example, from the businesses you like on your Facebook page) to your online community, you would need to create another type of publishing mechanism. You could write short blog posts about each item you see in your news feed that you want to share with your online community. You could use Twitter and create tweets with links to send people to the Facebook pages of other companies.

Your news feed is based on your business page relationship with other Facebook pages. You could encourage your online community to like the other business pages so they have a relationship with the other business.

I’m really not sure why you would want your online community to be reading items in your news feed. If you can share that reason, perhaps I can help you think of an alternative strategy.

  3. Matthew says:

OK, so I know how to do all of these things from my page, but what if I want to do something like link mailchimp to my business profile, but not my personal profile?!

  4. Charlene Kingston says:

I use Constant Contact, and they offer a Facebook Page signup form. If you visit my page, you’ll see it in the menu (below my pic) as Newsletter Sign Up. I’m not a MailChimp customer, so I’m not sure if MailChimp offers that service.

If they don’t, you need to add a custom Facebook landing page. There are many services that can provide these pages or templates for them. Some of them are free (in return for advertising on your page). Others charge a small amount each month. However, you can also hire someone to do this for you (or do it yourself if you are technical) and only have a one-time cost.

In general, adding a custom Facebook landing page is a great idea for any business. It’s a topic that I haven’t yet addressed on my site because I haven’t yet added one to my Facebook presence.

I’d love to hear from anyone about your experience with custom Facebook landing pages.

I need a facebook landing page. pronto

Is there software I can use to do this?
Campaign monitor (which I use) has some kind of FB integration
which so far is impossible to understand

but where should my social media venue lie if FB is so harsh on businesses?
should i be on a different site?

There are many tools that help you to build a Facebook landing page. One that I’m currently reviewing is Pagemodo, but there are many others. Some have a free option with advertising, and they all offer a monthly subscription for additional services. It’s also possible to hire a web developer to build a custom landing page for you with the advantage that you have just a one-time fee. With a little technical skill, you can also build one yourself for free. I’ve posted a link to an article on my Facebook page that explains one way to do that. (https://www.facebook.com/SocialMediaDIY)

Facebook is a great tool, but it doesn’t work as your primary online presence. Your business needs a website (and a blog) to be the center of your presence. Then, you can supplement your presence with social media sites like Facebook.

Ive created the business page on facebook but for some reason Im unable to see the “Use Facebook as Page” menu? Is there something I did not setup correctly?

  8. Charlene Kingston says:

It’s really hard to tell right now, Kay. Facebook is in the midst of rolling out huge changes to Facebook pages. For example, they gave me the option to convert my page earlier, and so my page is different from the standard page. I don’t know if your new page has the new features or not.

Try using the down arrow menu (top right) and see if that has a Use Facebook As option.

If that doesn’t work, try going to your page, and see if the menu options change. You can also see if you can edit your page.

I’m sorry I can’t give you a more exact answer right now. Things are changing. The roll out is supposed to be in effect on March 30.

I just took on a job as the social media guru for a small business. I created an event and am trying to invite our page likers to the event but it isn’t giving me the option on my event page. My research led me here and I am now lost because even though I have a business page, I am not given this account tab or the option to use facebook as a page. Argh.

  10. Charlene Kingston says:

Alice, until you can access the page as a page administrator, there is nothing you can do. Facebook has changed the way event work with the timeline rollout. I haven’t had the opportunity to use the new features, so I can’t comment on them. This is why every business needs an email list–so you can notify people outside of Facebook about your Facebook events. Good luck!

I created facebook page for my company from scratch. I didn´t have personal facebook account to add it in to. So I created one (personal not business type) and now I would like to use my personal account as well but I am unable to switch to it, I am logged in to page constantly. There is no entry to switch the type of account I use in “Your Settings”. From Manage-menu I can choose “Use Facebook as my page” but its always there and does not make any changes. Any idea what went wrong with the login process or what the heck this is? Thanks!

  12. Charlene Kingston says:

It sounds like you created a business account (login) and not a personal account, Teemu. If you don’t have the option to switch to you from your page, that’s the reason I say this. There is an easy way to fix this if you truly want a personal Facebook account.

Go back to Facebook.com (log out) and start the process to create a personal profile. You will have to use a different email address. Create your profile, and then go to your business page and like it.

Log out of your personal account and log in to your business account. From the Admin Panel, use Manage Your Page to edit your page. Then, under Manage Admins, add yourself (the email you used for your personal account) as an admin. Log out of your business page. Make a note of your business page login information and set it aside.

Now, you can use Facebook through your personal account to manage both your profile (personal) and page (business). Use Facebook as Page will work now. But don’t lose your business account login information. You may need it again one day.

  13. Teemu says:

Oh thank you so much! I try that immediately. I don´t know why they have to make things so confusing, with no way to get help from people at facebook. Thanks again!
